| Rand M. Voorhies, M.D. received his medical degree from Tulane University, and before graduation was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society for academic excellence. He completed his neurosurgical residency at The New York Hospital – Cornell Medical Center, and stayed in New York an additional year for a research fellowship at Memorial Sloan - Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Voorhies began his neurosurgical career at Ochsner, where he remained for 22 years – the last 10 of which were as Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery. In 2006 he left to pursue a new practice opportunity and together with his new partners helped found Southern Brain & Spine, LLC.
While at Ochsner Dr. Voorhies was an active member of the clinical faculty of the LSU Department of Neurosurgery, and participated in the educational training of residents at Ochsner. As part of his academic activities at Cornell and later at LSU, he authored or co-authored 43 medical articles and book chapters, as well as developing an experimental brain retractor that was granted a U.S. Patent. He is a member of multiple national neurosurgical societies, and is a diplomat of the American Board of Neurological Surgery. Dr. Voorhies’ scope of practice includes general adult neurosurgery with a special emphasis on complex spine and minimally invasive spinal operations. He was one of the first specialists in this region to perform minimally invasive lumbar disc surgery. Dr. Voorhies continues his interest in surgical outcome research in an ongoing effort to monitor and improve treatment results. He is extremely excited about his new clinical environment centered on the campus of East Jefferson General Hospital, which emphasizes individual patient care and attention. Dr. Voorhies looks forward to this wonderful opportunity to continue to help serve the neurosurgical needs of the Gulf Coast region. • Click to visit Dr. Voorhies' web site
